Sharing a desktop over the Internet or controlling a computer remotely is a bit tricky, especially if the used application forces you to go through a maze of options and make all sorts of complex settings. If you are trying to show something on your desktop to your friends, you can do it almost instantly with Mikogo. All you have to do is provide your partners with an ID number and allow them to connect.

The application comes in several editions, with different prices, depending on how many hosts and participants you need in one session. You can choose to pay an annual fee or make a one-time payment. You should also know that Mikogo is a cross platform application, which means that you may control a Windows or Linux powered computer from a Mac OS X platform or vice-versa.

Simplicity is one of Mikogo's key features. The application is lightweight and it can be operational in less than a minute. You just need to run its setup file and all the necessary files will be installed right away. You also need an online account to sign onto the desktop application, but it takes only a few seconds to create it. There are no server and client modules to speak of. Your partners can use the same setup file to install Mikogo on their computers. Alternatively, they can use a web interface, which eliminates the need to install the application in the first place.

The user interface is compact, but it can be expanded, by clicking its buttons, to reveal login options, a scheduler, a profiles manager and other features. You can decide to start or join a session. If you start a new session, you can choose a viewing direction, if you wish to show or view something or allow other users to view your actions and control your computer, if necessary. Once you start a session, the application will provide you with a unique ID, which you must send to your partners.

During a session, you can assign a partner as a presenter and one as a controller, by selecting them in different drop menus. You can use a series of tools to draw on your screen, send messages or share files. To join a session, you just need to type its ID and connect. Depending on your partner's settings, you will be able to see and control everything on his screen. If you are not selected as the controller, you can still click on the remote desktop, to place an arrow with your name beneath it, if you wish to point something out.

Pros

The application can be installed almost instantly and it can establish a connection just as fast. It allows a host to assign participants as controllers or presenters. You can also chat and exchange files during a session.

Cons

Passwords are not hidden when creating an online account. Also, it would be better if a password was required when establishing a connection. If you need a fast, reliable and secure solution for sharing your desktop or controlling remote computers, Mikogo is exactly what you are looking for.
